Juliette has lost her cuddly toy

« … »

Juliette is never without her cuddly toy, a crocodile, even when she brushes her teeth or goes roller skating with Pablo.
But one day, low and behold, the crocodile disappeared.

Juliette cannot live without her cuddly toy. It’s a crocodile, but he is soft and cuddly and only eats vegetables.

When she goes to school, she hides it under the desk to keep from frightening the teacher. You never know… even if he’s very nice.

When she brushes her teeth before going to bed she takes him with her. It’s important for a crocodile to take care of his teeth… even if he’s very nice.

When she goes roller skating with her friends Louis and Lucien, she holds onto her crocodile, since he doesn’t have any skates, and if he did, he might get lost.

One day Juliette attached her skates, then put on her wool bonnet and left the house.

One day Juliette attached her skates, then put on her wool bonnet and left the house. The weather was so nice that she decided to go looking for her friends Louis and Lucien so they could all go skating together.

They went to the park where there is plenty of space. It’s a great place for roller skating and imagining that you’re chasing bandits.

Louis

“Where’s your cuddly toy?” he asked.

Juliette stopped and looked around. No crocodile.

Juliette

“I must have left him at home,” she exclaimed.

And she rushed off, skating very, very, very fast until she reached her home.

At home she looked everywhere – under her bed, in the closet, in the laundry basket, in her mother’s handbag. No crocodile.

Juliette was very unhappy. She sat down on the doorstep and began to cry.

“No cuddly toy”

Corentin the duckling, who just happened to be passing by, saw Juliette crying and asked what was the matter.

Juliette

“It’s my cuddly toy,” she replied. “I lost my crocodile. I’ve looked everywhere. I can’t find it anywhere.”

Corentin

Maybe I can find you another one” offered Corentin, who was always ready to help.

Juliette

Juliette cried even harder. “But I want my crocodile” she wailed.

Corentin

“Just wait and see,” said Corentin. And off he went.

He came back a few minutes later with a package under his wing. He gave the package to Juliette.

“Open it,” he said.

In the package was a little green frog that jumped as soon as it saw Juliette.

Juliette

“Oh,” cried Juliette. “He’ll never want to stay with me. And he’s not nice and soft.”

Corentin

“Sorry,” answered Corentin. And with that he went away again.

When he returned he gave her a second package. Inside there was a pine cone that Corentin had found in the forest.

Juliette

Juliette was very surprised. “It looks like a hedgehog. All it needs is a couple of eyes. But it’s not soft and cuddly. It might prick me while I’m sleeping.”

Corentin

“It smells really good,” said Corentin.
“Like a forest. A crocodile does not smell like a forest.”

But Juliette could not be consoled. So Corentin promised to find something else.

As he was walking in the forest, Corentin met Lucien, the little fox.

Corentin

“Did you by any chance see Juliette’s cuddly toy?”

Lucien

“Non,” replied Lucien. “Why don’t we go to the library? We might find an idea for something to replace the crocodile.”

Together Corentin and Lucien went to the library. Lucien loves books. He says you can find everything in books.

The two friends looked at lots of books. They found trains, cars, stars, even planets.

Corentin

“Oh, that won’t do. A planet is too big, and a star is too far away.”

Lucien and Corentin left the library, disappointed.

On the way home, they saw Louis the Rabbit’s mother hanging up the washing on a clothes line. Since she has a lot of children, there were lots of socks attached with clothes pins.

Suddenly Corentin got an idea. With Lucien’s help he grabbed a small, very soft green sock that was hanging on the line.

Lucien

“All we need to do is draw a mouth and eyes. What a lovely cuddly toy!”

When Corentin gave the sock to Juliette, she was a bit surprised. Lucien put his paw in the sock and made it talk like a puppet.

Juliette couldn’t help laughing. “Oh, that’s funny. Let me try.”

And she was having so much fun that she almost forgot her crocodile.

The next day, on her way to the park to roller skate, Juliette ran into Louis the Rabbit. He was having trouble walking because he had only one sock. His tennis shoes hurt his feet.

Louis

“Mummy is angry,” he said. “Someone stole one of our socks.”

When he saw Juliette’s new cuddly toy, Louis looked very surprised.

Louis

“Why, that’s my sock! Give it to me.”

Louis snatched the sock and ran away. Juliette ran after him shouting.

Juliette

“Give me back my cuddly toy. Give me back my toy.”

When they reached Louis’s house the children saw the clothes drying on the line. Socks, jeans, skirts…and right in the middle of the clothes they spied something green.

Juliette drew closer and saw that it was neither a sock, nor a pair of panties, nor a skirt. It was a crocodile!

Oh, my crocodile! But why is he drying with the clothes?”

Louis’s mother came out of the house.

Louis's mother

“I found this crocodile on the ground crying his eyes out. So I picked him up and washed him so he would be all clean like before. Here, take it.”

Juliette took her crocodile in her arms. He smelled so good, like flowers. She was very, very happy.
